The New York Urban League invites you to join us for Giving Tuesday on November 30th!

As we all know, last year was an extremely difficult one for students as they faced social isolation, technology deserts and academic challenges. So we're excited to be bringing back Empowerment Days, which provide an opportunity for young people to visit corporations around the city and learn about career possibilities that they might not ever imagine. We are optimistic that by implementing appropriate health precautions, we will be able to offer this critical program again in 2022. Our goal for Giving Tuesday is to raise at least $25,000 specifically for the New York Urban League’s Empowerment Days. And on this global day of giving, contributions to NYUL will be matched dollar for dollar by Lyft and an anonymous giver to help fuel our Empowerment Days.

Giving Tuesday is a Global Day of Giving, powered by social media, collaboration, and campaigning. #GivingTuesday was created in 2012 by Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y - a cultural center in New York City and has become a global philanthropic movement. Giving Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

We are creating a team to help us reach our goal by making a contribution and encouraging others in their networks to give as well. Prizes and bragging rights will be available as well as a social media kit to help make sure that you have all the tools you need to make your fundraising goal.

Previous Empowerment Day event highlights have included: meaningful round table discussions between male participants and their mentors which have led to long-term connections; and unique experiences such as boarding a JetBlue airplane, meeting Oprah while being hosted at O Magazine, and enjoying a meal prepared by celebrity chefs at the Food Network. The end of day receptions is also a highlight where participants have had the opportunity to reflect on their experience and develop action steps for moving forward.

Past Corporate Partners have included the NBA, the Food Network, Google, BET, Mount Sinai, Interpublic, American Airlines, L’Oréal, Microsoft, NBC-New York, and WABC-TV. We have also been joined by incredible guest speakers including music icon Mary J. Blige, actress Kim Coles, TV personality Bevy Smith, former NBA great John Starks, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, among others.

Our efforts will be celebrated at the NYUL Holiday and Volunteer Appreciation Reception on Tuesday, December 7th at Home to Harlem. Please send an email to president@nyul.org if you are interested in serving on the Giving Tuesday Team and helping raise dollars for NYUL this Fall! Or a contribution can be made on NYUL site.
